It's Done

I quit caffeine. For someone who swears they weren't addicted (and I maintain I don't think I really was...), it was a big deal decision. But, as of now, I haven't had caffeine since just before Christmas. I think that's been long enough I can actually say it's stuck.

Things that helped included Isaac quitting at the same time and getting rid of all products in our house and then we just...stopped. I'm pretty sure both of us assumed we'd start up again, but yesterday we both marveled that it's been as long as it has. And it's been relatively easy. Ish. I've missed it. A little. But I've started drinking more water (which, soda aside, is a HUGE deal for me). But I haven't missed it as much as I thought I would.

My drug of choice is fountain cherry coke (or vanilla *i'mlookingatyoucaferio*). NOTHING beats a fountain coke. It just is the best. I prefer that over cans, hands down. But you can't get fountain caffeine free. But still. Between the caffeine free Dr. Peppers and Cokes in our garage and fountain Sprite, I've been making do. And my soda consumption has dwindled. Which I KNOW is good. I would tell you all how great I feel, but our air quality has been so bad lately, that I don't know if I'd know how good feels if it slapped me in the face. So we'll just assume I do until spring. Spring! Sonic season! Sniff. I hadn't thought about Sonic season! The most glorious time of the year. I think I'll be getting to know different flavored Sprites REALLY well...

  1. The cherry lime doesn't have caffeine right??

I'm still struggling- because when I do bring soda back after easter I'll be cutting the caffeine and you just can't buy caffeine free Dr. Pepper here... which might be a good thing.

Husband support is awesome isn't it? I'd like water better if we had ice- I rarely remember to make ice. Silly me- better go put one in the freezer right now.

LOVE YOU. PS- I thought of you this morning as I dressed Charlie in a hand-me-down Portland Onesie. (I've never been.) Happy apartment hunting.

    1. Can you not get them at all? We have CF DR Pepper in most grocery stores here...I'm surprised you can't get them there. It's been a LIFE SAVER!

I'm so proud of you for just giving it up! You have my total support!

(And glad to see you're raising Charlie right! ;) )
      Love you!

  2. We quit all soda's about the time Dad quit working in Nov. We remarked the other day how long it had been, and we don't even miss them. Sonic cherry coke is the best. We only drink water now, and have both lost a lot of poundage . Yea for you. Love Mom

  3. I quit caffeine in high school thanks to a challenge from a seminary teacher. Unlike you, I was addicted and I knew it. The first two weeks were awful. I had headaches and Sprite just didn't cut it for me. But at the end of the two month challenge I didn't want to go back (not for religious reasons, solely for health reasons). I did caffeine free coke and Dr. Pepper for awhile, but it's harder to find outside of Utah so I had to give those up when I moved to San Diego. I don't really miss them.
I love the burning sensation of carbonation though so we still do soda, but only about once a week. Plain sprite, orange, grape and root beer I can pass on most of the time. I've learned to make a few things like shirley temples, lime rickeys, vanilla sprites etc. so we can have them at home with hamburgers, etc. I love a root beer in a frosty mug with pizza. At sonic I usually go for a limeade or a slush. Occasionally I order a sprite with vanilla and lemon.
What we mostly drink lately though are Izze's (http://www.izze.com/). They're carbonated juices so they're much healthier than normal sodas, but still sweet and bubbly. I don't know if they're hard to find there or not, but we can buy cases of them at Costco here. I highly recommend them.
I have a lot of friends and family who are hooked on sodas and I wish they would give them up or at least cut back. They're so bad for you. The hubby support definitely helps. It would be much harder if my husband wasn't on the same page as me. Good for you! You can do it! Sometimes you just have to be a little more creative.

    1. I like Izze's, but don't love them. They are everywhere here, though (in fact, I noticed our local burger place is carrying them now!).

And, yeah. I'm not ready to give up all carbonation, though I know I should. But this has already GREATLY cut down the consumption!

  4. Sigh. I had a pomegranate Dr. P today. It was good. I'm getting close to wanting to tackle this again, just not there yet!

  5. Wow, that's AWESOME!! Really, I remember when Zeke quit drinking caffeine. He was gracious enough to do it while on a two week work trip -- he said it was pretty rough the first few days.

I just know it's so much healthier not to drink caffeine. Thankfully? I am "blessed" with a stomach that can't even tolerate any carbonation whatsoever, let alone caffeine.

  6. Oh, Dr. Pepper..... I don't think I'd struggle with caffeine if that blessed/cursed drink hadn't been invented...
