What I've Learned

1. I would make a terrible shut-in. Seriously. Living every day in your house, in your mind...you start creating problems that aren't there. You start imagining everyone else out there, having a good time, without you. You lose track of everything and everyone. Your head is a horrible thing to get lost in, sometimes. If it was by choice? Totally awesome. Not by choice? I fear of hearing voices. I miss my mid week "therapy" sessions desperately. My friends are my salvation and I hate that I haven't been able to see them lately. Not only am I a baby when I'm sick, I pout pretty darn well when Sammy's sick, too...

2. I haven't left my house (minus tylenol runs) since last Friday. When flesh was ripped from my chest. I've drowned my sorrows in immense amounts of British chick lit. I'm sure there are NO side effects from that, certainly.

3. My hair is now well past my shoulders. Not that anyone knows that because I can't remember the last time I wore it down. Not owning a blow dryer when it's negative degrees a million is probably not the wisest of moves.

4. There is a Jane Austen symposium the beginning of March. I kinda want to go, but then think I should just shove my copy of Pride and Prejudice in and save the gas.

5. I'm feeling deep shifting in my life and I'm trying to find the words for it all. It's funny when you look back and see the change and still can't articulate.

6. We had tickets to see Before Midnight at Sundance yesterday. Due to Sammy and his illness and the air quality and no sleep and us feeling terribly, we chose not to go. It was the right decision, even though I know things would have been fine either way, but I was still sad. I understand the release date will be sometime in September and waiting is going to kill me, given the reviews I've read. And, well, I was reminded the last time we had tickets to something in Park City in winter, Sammy was also feverish. I'm starting to take a hint.

7. Sammy has drowned his illness in the British show Top Gear while he's been sick. I oddly find it really funny. Richard Hammond is my favorite. He's hilarious - unintentionally? I'm not sure. But he's funny. And while British irreverent sometime, Sammy loves to see the different ways they destroy the cars.

8. I got my first two seed catalogs of the season, this week. I want to plant an entire section of dry beans. Beans are such a focus in our house right now and I can't wait to try those we plant ourselves.

9. Do people REALLY care and does it REALLY matter that Beyonce lip synched at the inauguration? I'm baffled at the headlines when there are things out there that are TRULY important.

10. I feel I should end this with a random tidbit about Bones. But I don't have a lot to say. Other than that last episode? GAVE ME NIGHTMARES. Seriously. Creepy crawly nightmares. Which I think is a pretty impressive feat, for Bones...

*Tminus 7 days until I turn 39. But who's counting?

  1. 1. I'm pretty sure I feel exactly the opposite.

    3. I'm sorry that I'm copying, but I'm enjoying my to-my-shoulders-for-first-time-in-two-decades hair.

    4. No. You should totally go!

    7. I don't know what that means.

    9. Right? RIGHT????

  2. 4. I don't wanna go to Provo by my self, though. But P&P on the big screen? Sigh.

    7. You guys should Netflix it. Wait. No. Don't...

  3. Hudson loves Top Gear too. He watches it every day. I'm just glad he isn't into one of those annoying cartoons.

    1. I didn't really appreciate what a funny show it was until this week. The one where they drove across India was particularly amusing to me. Has he started in on Dirty Jobs? Also a Sammy favorite.

And we put some cartoon in the queue this week to check together...we deleted it before the show had actually started. It was so crass. I don't even remember what it is. So our queue is filled with Top Gear and Dirty Jobs and Charlie Brown and Shaun the Sheep. I'm ok with that!

  4. It is hard being a parent when you have to give up things you really want/were looking forward to. Totally get that. Been there. I hope there are brownie points in heaven for those sacrifices. I hope you don't have to stay quarantined much longer. :)

Jane Austen symposium? Hadn't heard about it.... I just started watching Lark Rise to Candleford last night. Probably one of the last people who love Regency period pieces to see it though. It is funny to see the same actors who are in so many other movies in different roles. Anyway, I like it so far (2 episodes in).

    1. Quarantine was lifted today. (hooray!)

I've never seen Lark Rise...good? Wait. I may have seen a bit of one on PBS the other day. I think that's the one with Patrick from Coupling on it. Must google!

    2. I'm glad things are better today!

Lark Rise is good so far. I haven't heard of Coupling, so I can't help you there.
Another favorite is North and South by Elizabeth Gaskell--the BBC movie is worth watching, too.

One thing about winter, maybe one of the few positives, is it seems to be my best time of year for book reading and movie watching. :)

    3. Um, I can't, morally, recommend Coupling to most people. It's very...British and open, shall we say? It struck me as funny, though, that one of the principles was in Lark. Such a departure.

North and South is in my queue and I'm thinking this weekend is looking perfect to start it!

  5. I'm just going to take a moment at laugh at the last comment and you know why.

    Moving on.

Very curious about the dry beans. I had no idea, as in never thought to ask or ponder about, that you could grow dry beans in Utah.

    1. Seriously! Patrick is in a period drama on PBS! I laughed and laughed and then started singing Spiderman.

Man. I'm eternally burning in hell for getting you all hooked on it, aren't I?

And, YES! Beans! I have to order packs of a LOT. Want some to try this year?

  6. Seriously. Friends. I don't own a blow dryer and I have never met another person who doesn't.

Also, who are your british chick lit choices? I am partial to Sophie Kinsella but I have run out of her books, and I don't have another one I love as much as her.

    1. Seriously! People just look at me weird when I say I don't own one!

I just plowed through most of Harriet Evens. Some were better than others. But good. http://www.goodreads.com/author/show/292599.Harriet_Evans

      Also, Ali McNamara.

  7. Love North and South! Been meaning to watch Lark Rise. Lately I've been watching lots of Buffy, which I'm strangely enjoying.
Also - love getting seed catalogs! When it comes to beans, I've always thought I'ld have to plant an enormous amount of them to get what I wanted from them, so never end up planting any. There is a book out there - wish I could remember what it was called - all about beans, how each kind tastes, and how to grow/cook/find the seed for them (since many are harder to find). When I heard about it I was amazed at all the different characteristics of beans - like which ones make a good pot liquor. That book would make me want to plant lots of beans. Maybe that's why I don't have it already? That's why I avoid Pinterest anyways, I know the danger.

    1. I tried Buffy once. I should try again...

I've been wanting to get a bean book...maybe I shouldn't! I already want to plant about 7 different varieties this year alone...I can only imagine when our garden is bigger how that will change!

  8. I can't wait til Wednesday :)

    I'm losing focus here... sorry

Um, is Top Gear on Netflix? We'll have to check it out.

You know me... most of the media stuff you mentioned... I don't know much about, but the shut-in thing I get. Totally. I actually like it for awhile, but when Kaia was younger.. it would be weeks sometimes and I literally felt like a prisoner. I thought I was losing my mind... and not getting sleep didn't help.

Ahhh, it feels good to be out and about again, doesn't it? I hope Sammy's having a good week back to school. :)

One more thing... could you let me know what seed catalogs you have... I may have to check into getting a subscription for us too! That is a fun thing to think about right now in the middle of all this winter! :)

    1. Netflix. Yes. I can see Beck loving it.

I'll try to remember my catalogs tomorrow and show you. I don't remember them all right now and most haven't come yet!

  9. Is it weird that Adam LOVES AND ADORES the British Top Gear? Is it awkward or cool that a 31 year old man loves the same show as the 6 year olds? hmmmm.....

    1. No, I think that is about right. It's kinda become a family favorite!
