(these are standing in our front yard, looking out to our side yard (and the lot next to us)
(side yard)
(front yard, the other way, including the ONE strip of weed block we laid down Monday)
(and, um, my pretty chairs. just because these pics are depressing, otherwise!)
The goal this summer: weeds pulled, weed cover laid, trees (one apple for the front, one cherry for the side) bought and transplanted in fall, fence priced and ready to go either late summer or next spring, lilacs planted in fall.
Next summer: fence up, garden boxes started, concrete additions (extending the porch, driveway and park strip) priced out and done.
Left after that: porch swing, the rest of the garden boxes, decking in the back yard, clothesline and everything else I've forgotten!
(come undone, duran duran)

aren't lilacs flowers?
Shhhhhh! Maybe if you don't tell me, I won't know. (and while you're at it, maybe you could curb this urge I have to plant irises, as well!)
sorry, you won't be getting that kind of "encouragement" from me!
I saw some BEAUTIFUL ones at the park yesterday, dagnabit!
I'm pretty sure lilacs are trees, as are apples and cherries. It will be so beautiful in the spring when the trees all bloom!
I have always wanted a lilac in our yard. Alas, the yard will have to wait for a year or two. We looked at kits for garden boxes and decided that for what I want, we have to wait....Sigh...
They have kits? Really? We're just making ours from wood. I had no idea any other option existed!
Go with lilacs are bushes. Irises are beautiful, not much maintance. You may need to plant more that one tree of each, you need polinators. I have some ideas on getting rid of the weeds, if you are interested. Love Mom MORE TREES, MORE FLOWERS = BEAUTIFUL
Mom - I think we're going to plant three lilac bushes in front of the garage (those windows in the second to last photo are the front of the garage). I have no idea how to go about planting flowers...and I'm not sure where I'd put them. Maybe by the fence / sidewalk in the front.
I'd love ideas on getting rid of weeds as long as it doesn't involve chemicals! Right now we're doing the weed block and then as we build the garden boxes, we're either going to flagstone or bark chip around them (on top of the weed block). NO grass anywhere in the yard...
I think it is going to look great. I agree with mom that you might need more than one of each tree to pollinate. I am thinning out my irisis and lillies this year if the urge doesn't pass ;)
I put weed block in my fairy garden, but I didn't use the good, heavy, duty stuff, but the "cheap, let's get more and finish it all right now" stuff and I wish I had used the heavy duty stuff because it is not working except in the few places I used the heavy stuff.
And after spending the last 10 years trying to make this yard be what I want, I am wishing I had a whole brand new pallet of a yard to start over with because I have learned a lot about what I like and don't like, want and don't want. You are so smart to start with a plan.
Love the chairs
I don't have room for more than one tree of each...
What color are your irises? (not the lillies)
And do we still need two of them if we are getting them already mostly grown and producing?
possibly; it depends on the kind of tree. Some of them need a spouse and some of them don't. You'll need to ask when you buy it.
Huh. I don't remember them saying anything about it last year. I'll have to ask Isaac if he remembers anything.
They don't always volunteer the information, you have to ask for it. Pears always need a spouse- cherries and apples it depends.
I have purple and white irises that I am dividing this year. I am doing a post on my summer projects and my yard is one of them, so I will have a picture of them up by evening if you want to see them. (I have a virus and it is taking me forever to post anything. That and homework)
I'll ask. Though Isaac wants to know who performs the ceremony and if it's legal or not...
If they are purple-y purple, probably not. If they are more eggplant / black purple, then yes please!
I think it's more of an unspoken agreement that we all look the other way...
Ahhhhh....so don't ask, don't tell has been moved from gays in the military to fruit trees marriage ceremonies! Sneaky...
Ya, the kits are only six inches high though, so you have to put several together for what I have in mind. The kits at Home depot have hinges so that is easy to stack them or make different shapes for however you like it, it is just expensive to get several at once.
Huh. Yeah. I can't imagine ever buying those when you can make your own out of wood!
You could always take a tiller and till your yard, then lay down some sod.... then you'll have nice grass and eliminate a lot of the weeding work.....
Yeah, that would work. Except for the whole "we don't want grass in our yard" thing...
At our old house we had one of each: cherry, pear, peach and granny smith apple. We didn't ask any questions. Just bought them and planted them and they all bore fruit within a couple of years. *shrug*
So.... are you putting lava rock down then?
See, Trish? That's totally what we would have done!
D - No. (not that there's anything wrong with that...) We're putting deck down in the back (this: http://www.ikea.com/us/en/catalog/products/20165486) and edible landscaping the front. So everything will be garden boxes with just a flag stone path in between.
