February Book

For February, we read The Hunger Games by Suzanne Collins. And then I immediately went out and bought the sequel and pre-ordered the third book coming out in August. Whew!

I started reading shortly after our last book club. I had NO idea what it was about, so I just started in. And then my mouth fell open and I put it down, uncertain if I wanted to keep reading. A week later I picked it up and COULD. NOT. PUT. IT. DOWN. It's been a LONG time since I read a book in a day. A LONG time. Poor Sammy got to watch a lot of tv while I finished!

This is not at all my usual book choice. Isaac chuckled when I told him the premise and started laughing that I was reading science fiction. I'm not a scifi kind of girl. Unless you count watching Firefly or Big Bang Theory... Which I totally don't. But I just got caught up in the story and was desperate to find out what happened. And then what happened. And then what happened. Such a lovely escape book. And beautifully written. I honestly could SEE these people and their world. I felt as if I knew them by the end. High praise, indeed.

I was trying not to start the sequel, Catching Fire, quite yet, knowing I have until August until the third book comes out, but...I caved. Read it on Tuesday. Read 2/3 of it at one sitting and then had the hardest time deciphering fact from fiction for a good ten minutes after I put it down. I couldn't tell you the last time a book has sucked me in so thoroughly. All day Wednesday I kept FEELING like their laws were our laws and I had such an unsettling feeling, not knowing the difference. Cannot wait until book three...

Next up for March: The Sharper Your Knife, The Less You Cry by Kathleen Flinn

  1. Wow. High praise. Guess I'll have to put them on my list. I'm pretty sure it's a good thing that the list of must reads is so long. Reading a book in a day is a "gift day", I say.

  2. I've really enjoyed these books even though my feelings toward the protagonist are somewhat conflicted. I'm looking forward to Mockingjay.

One question for you: Peeta or Gale?

  3. Aunt Kay - definitely worth the read.

lbs - Ha! We had a lively discussion about that last night at book club. I'm firmly in the Peeta camp, as were a few of us. We did have a couple of Gale detractors, though...

  4. Gracious! I had EXACTLY the same experience. Ha. We read it for bookclub, I was a super slow starter, but then..ooh-boy I got sucked in. Like you I'm trying not to read the second book because everyone who has told me they wished they had waited because the end was such a cliff hanger. So far I've been successful. Reading The Help right after helped because that one sucked me in as well. Have you read it yet? Really excellent. So far, I'm rooting for Gale. But I like Peeta. But Gale is her rock, right?

  5. Laurel - I wish I had held off, because it IS quite the cliff hanger. I think I stared at the last page for several minutes hoping more words would spring up!

I just got The Help this week. I have a couple of other books lined up to read first and then I'll tackle that one.

  6. I'm with Peeta also, though I mostly think she doesn't deserve him.

  7. I would agree with that completely. Though, I guess, there's no accounting for love!

  8. You have me intrigued! My book club is doing the Help this month. I've gotta get my hands on a copy.

  9. Such a good one! I did the same thing. Couldn't put it down. I think I even brought it to Olive Garden that night when we went out. Could not stop. Allie did the same thing. She disappeared and came book done. Who would you recommend to play Katniss? I don't know any of the young actors/actresses. I can't see any being strong enough.

  10. Hi Tawnya. I loved The Hunger Games. I have yet to read book two though. I just know I will be consumed thinking about it until the next book comes out. I think we have very similar taste in T.V. shows. We loved "Firefly" we were sad that it was cancelled. I too am embarrassed to admit I love "The Big Bang Theory" Chad always makes fun of me, because starts watching it, usually while I am in the room, but busy with some other activity, and I always seem to laugh harder than him. Did you watch Dollhouse? We were sad that it was cancelled as well. I am curious what you think about "The Help", I enjoyed it, but it didn't consume me like "The Hunger Games" did.

  11. I am not a fan of sci fi, BUT..this sounds an awful lot like when I read and INHALED "Enders Game" and the rest of the series. AMAZING.

  12. Jen - the second one was WAY more intense. I really, really wanted to wait. I'm clearly just weak!

And while we both love big bang, I think I laugh more, as well...

We did watch Dollhouse. He just can't seem to catch a break on Fox!

Loralee - I don't like scifi at all, but this was so, so good. Just an overall great story. I haven't read Enders Game. Hmmmmm.
